![]() Three UB faculty members wrote and circulated an open letter to UB President Satish Tripathi asking him to rescind Knowles’ invitation to campus because of what one of the letter’s authors, UB Gender Institute Director Carrie Tirado Bramen, called “Knowles’ call for genocidal violence against trans folk.” ![]() ![]() In the days following that speech, UB faculty and students petitioned the university to cancel this Thursday’s YAF event on the grounds that Knowles’ speech at CPAC incited violence against trans people. ![]() Knowles made national headlines this week after saying that “transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely” in a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He wrote his first wife, Beatrice, in November 1945, that he planned “to list the names of every man I can remember clearly in the Army-there should be several hundred. Well before he experienced war firsthand, Mailer was preparing to write about it and almost every letter he wrote during his service was designed to record, and organize, his raw experience into an eventual novel. Published when Mailer was 25 years old, The Naked and the Dead remains his greatest fictional achievement-and in honor of Mailer’s centennial this year, Library of America has reissued a new hardback edition along with a new selection of his letters from 1945 to 1946. His realization is Mailer at his most cynical (and throughout his life, Mailer could be very cynical): The only soldiers who suffer disappointment in The Naked and the Dead are those who believe that the world is presided over by noble forces-America, God, or whatever general happens to be commanding them. ![]() Valsen is a young man who looks at war as a way to get away from a country that never made a home for him, only to find military life as brutal as the Montana mining town where he was raised. “There damn sure ain’t anything special about a man if he can smell as bad as he does when he’s dead,” Red Valsen reflects in Norman Mailer’s 1948 novel The Naked and the Dead. ![]() ![]() ![]() Story Kvothe, a legend who isn’t interested in such acclaim, is waiting out his days in the lonely barkeep he’s erected in solitude. For added flavor, I will be sprinkling quotations from the books throughout the review, and though I will refrain from being overly specific with my details, there are certainly going to be spoilers of a sort, so tread with caution. It only seems appropriate, considering the series’ unwavering ability to shoehorn its way into so many hearts, that we take our own look at The Kingkiller Chronicle and put a Christian lens to it. These two books are regarded highly within the realm of contemporary epic fantasy, stealing the attention of millions of fans and daring to stand among other titans within the genre. ![]() ![]() This means I will be covering content spread through both of the available Kingkiller Chronicle books by Patrick Rothfuss– The Name of the Wind and its sequel, The Wise Man’s Fear. I figure it best to disclose that knowledge walking in the door, so you aren’t confused or surprised. Genre: Epic Fantasy I’d like to precede this review by letting you know I will be spanning the entire series with one article. “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” Author: Patrick Rothfuss ![]() ![]() ![]() There may not be a birth certificate for comics (especially if you embrace the broader definition of “sequential art”), but the strip was certainly raised in New York, and well fed by the competition between newspapers and their publishers in the early 1900s. “Stopping bullets ain’t in your job description anymore, boss,” says his aide when the guns come out. ![]() As might Mitchell Hundred, who, despite possessing superpowers unsuited to desk work, hangs up his cape and becomes mayor of the city in Ex Machina. ![]() Not to be outdone, Spider-Man once even said “I am New York.” Batman, the Ninja Turtles, the Fantastic Four, Superman and a host of other do-gooders in stretch pants may have thoughts on that. Surely no streets have been portrayed on the pages of comics as often as Manhattan’s, most famously as Metropolis by day and Gotham by night. I f you have made it this far into the story, the chances are the city in your mind is New York. ![]() ![]() With the help of her best friend Lorena, and her first love, first everything boyfriend Connor, Julia is determined to find out.
